The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
