The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
